Homeschooling and Socialization

by Allison Goines

I like the view in this article.

This is a hot-button topic.  Some believe that the socialization received in a school setting is essential.  Some treat homeschooling as if the socialization achieved there is non-existent.

I’d love to hear from both sides on this!  Does homeschooling put children at risk of not being able to function well socially?

Until the last few years, I knew no home schooled people. In those few years, my experience has not been pleasant. There seems to be a longer socialization curve, that seems to not level out until the mid to late 20’s. It seems that many homeschoolers take a few more years to reach the same social behavior level as those who go through public or private schools. Yes, they reach the level, eventually, but not until they enter the work force and are no longer the teacher’s pet by default.

As a homeschooler you know where my opinion lies. From my own experiences in public schools the kind of socialization that happens there I hope my children never reach. Despite the opinions of some homeschooled children are by far more social because they don’t spend their days locked in a room with 25 other kids the exact same age as them that they aren’t allowed to talk to. I don’t even see the socialization happening there. Instead homeschooled children are able to talk openly to young children, adults, and everyone in between. Where as public schooled kids learn the hierarchy where younger children are to be picked on and older ones are to be feared, homeschool children do not have to fall into that trap. they can express themselves equally. yes they reach that level, like everyone else. Because, unfortunately we live in a world that praises those who bully anyone smaller. I personally think it’s a wonderful thing that they reach that later, and I hope that someday it will not be reached at all.

I will be homschooling next year and this is a big concern for me…especially since we just moved to a new state and we don’t know anyone. So far I am looking into the YMCA, children’s theatre, and kids art classes.
