Vaccinations
Vaccinations. What a big topic. So many points to consider.
My view? Enough children will be vaccinated that I don’t really have to worry about vaccinating my child. But, I do anyway. I have no problem with people who don’t. In fact, I admire them for fighting this fight because many times it is not easy going for those who choose to keep their children free of the substances found in vaccines.
Why shouldn’t it be a parent’s choice to decide whether or not to inject their children with vaccinations? The better question is why should things be made more difficult for those who have researched and made their decision to not vaccinate?
Your thoughts?

The problem is, it is a public health issue and everyone needs to be vaccinated for them to be useful. We require car seats, and no one argues that as “right of parent to refuse”. I have seen some families with multiple cars, kids really struggle with car seats because of varying job schedules and lack of funds. Realistically, only the child is affected by using a car seat. Vaccinations affect EVERYONE.
Childhood diseases are real and fatal. When I was in 2nd grade, a classmate of mine died from chicken pox. It was in Kansas and in the 1970s. Not some remote country in the 1800s. Furthermore, my husband got chicken pox as an adult and was seriously ill. And this is just chicken pox!
It makes me angry to see children dying of whooping cough in this day and age in this country. That’s crazy!
And yes, I know there are concerns that there may be a link between mercury and autism. I am not a stranger to this - my brother tested just outside of the autism spectrum and I have another family member currently starting he testing for it. We have no issues with vaccine requirements.

I don’t understand the argument made in Kelli’s comment: how again, do vaccinations affect everyone? How does one unvaccinated child affect all the rest who ARE vaccinated? If they’re vaccinated, they can be exposed to LOTS of sick people and they won’t get sick — that’s the whole point of vaccinations….
It ought to be up to each family to weigh the pros and cons for themselves. If you have reason to believe (because of family history, perhaps?) that a vaccine will harm your child, it ought to be your RIGHT to refuse that vaccine.

We made an educated choice not to vaccinate. I took the time to read books, articles, studies, and speak with professionals who are specialized in diseases. I think all parents should make an educated choice, no matter what they choose. Don’t just do something because of a 30 second sound bite and a color poster hanging in the doctor’s office.
